The Road to Global Leadership in Aviation

The founder of Boeing is a timber salesperson William Boeing. He started his own company in 1916 in Seattle. Throughout the years it underwent many changes, merges and acquisitions to finally become the international corporation we know today.

At first, the company was called Aero Products Company which was renamed to Boeing Airplane in 1917, later on William Boeing created Boeing Airplane & Transport Corp (1928). One year after that the company was renamed again and started acquiring several aircraft manufacturers among which Chance Vought, Hamilton Metalplane, Sikorsky Aviation, Pratt & Whitney, Avion and Stearman Aircraft.

In 1931, the company merged four of the smaller airlines to form United Airlines. Three years later the two business lines - aircraft manufacturing and air transportation had to be separated. This is when Boeing Airplane became one of the three organizations that formed after the separation of Transport and United Aircraft.

The corporation we know today is a result of the merger of McDonnell Douglas and Boeing which took place in 1997.

Today the Boeing Company is based in Chicago and is organized into five main divisions:  Commercial Airplanes (BSA); Capital; Defense; Engineering, Technology & Operations; Shared Services Group; Space & Security (BDS).
